With all the hype surrounding this movie, you’d think it was the second coming. Hell, the part of Klaatu – a humanoid being that has a difficult time speaking or acting normally – is the perfect part for Keanu Reeves. The most memorable line of the original 1951 version “Gort, Klaatu barada nikto” is never used in the remake. Gort lacks the unique appeal he had in the ’51 original. Instead, the military calls the critter a “Gort” – don’t remember what it stands for – some milspeak trashy made-up acronym.
The movie is one of the absolute worst POS I have ever seen. Come on – man is doomed because of the way he treats the planet. Destruction begins. Then Klaatu ends it, sacrificing himself, because he witnesses a step-mom make up with her detestable brat. Huh? Why? If anything, that kid alone would be a good reason to end the human race! The Earth stands still because of a giant EMP – something the military could have done all along. Not because of something Klaatu does in warning, as in the original.
This is a perfect example of why a classic should not be messed with.
